21 Days to go

Dear ,

Well it's been a frantic 9 days since I last updated you, lots more boats and only a day of two left until we have to close the boat registration. There is a little room left for those late comers but you need to be quick - we've tried to look at stacking the boats two high, but the lower boat owners aren't too happy with that idea. So we've scrapped that.

As you would have heard in pubs, LAST ORDERS - get in before Monday as we will be shutting off marina registrations on Monday. Hard stand registrations are going to be open for a few days more so get your info ready.

When I was a child I used to count down the number of sleeps until Christmas, so only 21 more sleeps, join me in the countdown

BOAMBILLEE S51

Boambillee is an outstanding example of an older ocean racer, dating back to the late 1960's. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens, the New York based naval architects, she was built in Sydney by one of the great wooden boat shipwrights of the era, Bill Barnett.

Boambillee is an interesting study in the evolution of ocean yacht racing, both in shape and in construction. She looks elegant, with smooth flowing lines, and no evidence of the hull distortions forced on later boat designers by rating rules (which measure the relative "handicaps" of different shapes). Her construction also hints at the early days of ocean racing, with an immensely strong construction not compromised by the dangerous emphasis on weight saving evidenced by later "lightweight"racing yachts. The first and essential function of this boat's design and construction was to survive whatever the oceans of the world threw at her.

The owners have kept Boambillee very much as she was...an authentic 1960's yacht. Even the bunk cushions have their original vinyl coverings. Compared to modern yachts she is dark and cramped below...but she does boast six bunks, a galley, and a head complete with toilet and sink.

The old racer is still fast, too. Against modern cruiser-racer type yachts Boambillee is quite competitive. In the classic fleet she is often up the front, frequently out-pacing much larger yachts. One day she will be a true collector's piece. For now, the owners are having too much fun racing and cruising, and enjoying the comments from the old salts as she comes into a new harbour: "what a great looking yacht!"

KELLY JANE

KELLY JANE

Built in 1960 as a crayfish boat by Peter Paine using kauri with celery top frames, Kelly Jane worked Victorian and Tasmanian waters until purchased by Haydn Warszewski in 2003. Haydn and Brett Almond spent two years in the restoration and re-engining and Kelly Jane is now a lady for leisure

JEZEBEL

JEZEBEL

Designed from a Whitehall concept by her owner builder Antony Perri, an offshore rig engineer, Jezebel is a clinker dinghy of hoop pine planking on steam bent silver top ash frames. She has oregan spars with a gaff rig and was completed in 2009 with the aid of Antony’s two sons Oscar and Gus.
